About the Book

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In 1893, seventeen-year-old Mary Anne Schlegel left her uncle’s Chicago home and vanished. The revelation of her fate a century later upends the life of Rachel Connolly, an adoptee seeking her roots, in this gripping novel of past and present.

"Partly set in a mysterious old house in the bleak far north as winter closes in and told from multiple points of view, both past and present, this fast-paced, compelling story resolves both mysteries and ends on a hopeful note."
--Booklist, Feb. 1, 2011

"An 1893 missing-person case has unexpected repercussions more than a century later in Pirrone's intriguing debut... Readers will hope to see more historical crime fiction from Pirrone, the nom de plume of Diane Piron-Gelman."
--Publishers Weekly Review, Dec. 6, 2010

"Pirrone cleverly shifts between Mary Anne's tale and Rachel's search, creating a page-turner for fans of both history and mystery."
--Kirkus Reviews, 9/30/10

"This may be a debut mystery, but Pirrone writes like a veteran. Her ability to create characters, whether a present-day adoptee seeking her roots, or the author of a beautifully written 1893 diary who just might be her ancestor, and then place them both in jeopardy, is the mark of a talented, accomplished, nuanced author. Don't miss NO LESS IN BLOOD."
--Libby Fischer Hellman, author of SET THE NIGHT ON FIRE
