Authors Discussion and Signing with Jack Fredrickson & John McEvoy

This will be the second time these two mystery writers, Jack Fredrickson & John McEvoy have been to Centuries & Sleuths together. Jack's book is work of fiction based on a true unsolved crime Silence the Dead. John's book is his latest adventure with Jack Doyle, High Stakes.

Silence the Dead:

"The new mayor of a small town in Illinois unearths a series of devastating secrets when he re-opens a 30-year-old murder investigation"

17-year-old Betty Jo Dean was abducted and murdered thirty years ago. It took two days to find her body. She was found, fully dressed apart from her slacks, beneath a gnarled, stunted tree, shot in the back of the head. No one was ever charged with her murder.
Now, following an appeal from one of his constituents, Mayor Mac Bassett has called for the case to be re-opened. But when the body is exhumed, it is revealed that the skull, found loose in the coffin, does not belong to Betty Jo.
If Mac could discover why Betty Jo s head was taken, he would be one step closer to finding out who killed her. But no one in the small town of Grand Point is talking. Sheriffs, doctors, medical examiners: everyone seems to be warning Mac off. And then people start dying "

High Stakes:

Irreverent Jack Doyle has worn many hats, one or two blown off by his irrepressible temper. A former boxer, advertising rep, and publicity man, Jack s midlife career has been shaped by the world of thoroughbred horse racing and dark deeds therein. So it s no surprise when two FBI agents he s sleuthed with before pressure him to identify an animal activist who is carrying out mercy killings of retired race horses donated to Midwestern university veterinary schools. Plus two Chicago senior citizens are being threatened by an imperious Internet millionaire intent on owning their beloved horse. Then a call comes from Ireland where the life of Jack s friend Niall Hanratty, the noted bookmaker, is under attack from an unknown enemy. Meanwhile Doyle s nemesis Harvey Rexroth, the rapacious media mogul Jack helped put into federal prison, enlists a fellow inmate, a Mobconnected attorney, to have Jack killed. Carrying out this contract will be W. D. Wiems, a brilliant, frighteningly warped University of Kansas student who has eagerly launched a career of murder for hire. Fast tracking, Jack visits vet schools while juggling pieces of investigations near home and traveling twice to Ireland where his quest to find Hanratty s enemy takes him to Kinsale, Connemara, and a Dublin slum. Meanwhile the vicious contract killer is, all unknown, tracking Jack "

Authors Discussion & Signing: Alex Buckholder & John Hogan

This will be the second visit from Alex Buckholder and John Hogan to Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore for their latest book Forgotten Fires Of Chicago: The Lake Michigan Inferno and a Century of Flame .

Chicago's war against cinder, flame and smoke did not end with the Great Fire of 1871. That conflagration was only one engagement in a ceaseless and often unrecognized conflict, fought in the most unlikely places. In 1909, fire ripped through the dynamite room of a staging facility one and a half miles off the Lake Michigan shoreline, transforming the pipe-laying operation into a raging inferno. During the World's Columbian Exposition, thousands of fairgoers watched in horror as twelve firefighters were trapped in a blazing ice warehouse. An operagoer left a smoking bomb under his seat at the Auditorium Theater in 1917, and the newly invented smoke ejector arrived too late to save firemen and laborers cut off in a sewer in 1931. Join John Hogan and Alex Burkholder for the history of these forgotten fires and the heroes who fight them.

Although this is Mr Perry's first appearance at Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore, it is approximately his 22nd novel. Don't miss the author, the discussion and buying Mr. Perry's latest book.

 A String of Beads

After two decades protecting innocent victims on the run, and a year after getting shot on a job that took a dangerous turn for the worse, Jane McKinnon, nee Whitefield, has settled into the quiet life of a suburban housewife in Amherst, New York--or so she thinks.

One morning as she comes back from a long run, Jane is met by an unusual sight: all eight clan mothers, the female leaders of the Seneca clans, parked in her driveway in two black cars. A childhood friend of Jane's from the reservation, Jimmy, is wanted by the police for the murder of a local white man. But instead of turning himself in, he's fled, and no one knows where he is hiding out. At the clan mothers' request, Jane retraces a walking trip she and Jimmy took together when they were fourteen in hopes that he has gone the same way again. But it soon becomes clear that the police aren't the only ones after him. As the chase intensifies, the number of people caught up in this twisted plot multiplies, and Jane is the only one who can protect those endangered by it. "A String of Beads" is an addictive, fast-paced thriller about how abandoning the past can sometimes be the hardest thing to do, even when your life--and the life of those you love--depends on it.

Author Discussion & Signing with Jeffrey Siger

Title: Sons of Sparta: #6 A Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis Mystery

Author: Jeffrey Siger

This is Jeffrey's 6th Andreas Kaldis mystery and his 6th visit to Centuries & Sleuths. This is a tradition  wheo hope will never end.

Come visit with Jeff as he talks about his latest msytery set in modern Greece.

Since he lives in Greece for about 1/2 of each year he can tell about his obeservations about this country in the 21st century. He loves the country, but he is quite frank when talking about what he sees.

Did the warriors of ancient Sparta simply vanish without a trace along with their city, or did they find sanctuary at the tip of the mountainous Peloponnese? That stark, unforgiving region's roots today run deep with a history of pirates, highwaymen, and neighbors ferociously repelling any foreigner foolishly bent on occupying this part of Greece. Less well recorded are the Mani's families' strict code of honor and their history of endless vendettas with neighbors and with their own relatives. No wonder their farms look like fortresses. When Special Crimes Division Detective Yiannis Kouros is summoned from Athens to the Mani by his uncle, Kouros fears his loyalty to his boss, Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis, is about be to be tested by family pressure on the detective to act in some new vendetta, for this uncle once headed the Mani's most significant criminal enterprise. Instead, Kouros learns the family is about to become rich through the sale of its property until the uncle is killed, and thus the deal. Acting swiftly to head off a new cycle of violence, Kouros satisfactorily solves the murder. Or so it seems until, back in Athens, Kaldis' probe into deeply entrenched government corruption leads straight back to the Mani. Both cops now confront a host of unexpected twists, unanticipated players, unanswered questions and people yet to die."has become a tradition that we hope will never end.
