Author Discussion & Siging: Libby Fischer Hellmann

Libby has chosen Centuries & Sleuths Bookstore for the Westside Debut of her latest & best mystery, Set the Night on Fire.

Set the Night on Fire:

Someone is trying to kill Lila Hilliard. During the Christmas holidays she returns from running errands to find her family home in flames, her father and brother trapped inside. Later, she is attacked by a mysterious man on a motorcycle. . . and the threats don't end there.

As Lila desperately tries to piece together who is after her and why, she uncovers information about her father's past in Chicago during the volatile days of the late 1960s . . . information he never shared with her, but now threatens to destroy her.

Part thriller, part historical novel, and part love story, Hellmann's Set the Night on Fire paints an unforgettable portrait of Chicago during a turbulent time: the riots at the Democratic Convention . . . the struggle for power between the Black Panthers and SDS . . . and a group of young idealists who tried to change the world.

Libby Fischer Hellmann is the award-winning author of the Ellie Foreman and Georgia Davis mystery series, and the two volume short story collection, Nice Girl Does Noir.  She also edited the highly praised crime fiction anthology, Chicago Blues. She has lived in the Chicago area for over thirty years. Set the Night on Fire is her first stand-alone novel.

Praise for Libby’s previous novels:

"Libby Fischer Hellmann has already joined an elite club: Chicago mystery writers who not only inhabit the environment but also give it a unique flavor."—Chicago Tribune

"A masterful blend of politics, history, and suspense... [with] sharp humor and vivid language."
Publishers Weekly

"Libby Hellmann knows how to reel in a reader, and she does it expertly in Doubleback. One of the tensest opening scenes ever written is just the introduction to a true puzzler of a thriller."
Tess Gerritsen, NYT bestselling author of The Keepsake

"Libby Hellmann can get into the mind of a character, whether the character is a mentally ill man or a teenage girl. I kept reading after the first brutal and fascinating pages because I . . . wanted to know what would happen to the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly people . . . This is good stuff, very good stuff."
Stuart M. Kaminsky, Grand Master, Mystery Writers of America

"Hellmann's done her homework here and it shows: the writing is assured, the voices authentic . . . [Georgia] Davis' arrival on the mean streets is long overdue."
Sara Paretsky, author of the V.I. Warshawski series and Bleeding Kansas

Author & Actor Performance & Signing with Fidelis Morgan & Celia Imrie

FIDELIS MORGAN, an actress as well as playwright, novelist and scholar, has published 15 books, fiction and non-fiction, which are translated all over the world. She frequently gives university talks on life in Restoration London, having been responsible for the rediscovery and revival of the female playwrights who worked in London between 1660 and 1720. Fidelis has been seen on US TV in Jeeves and Wooster, As Time Goes By and Dead Gorgeous. She has received nominations for her acting from The Observer and her novel, The Rival Queens, was nominated for a Lefty Award at Left Coast Crime.

Described by The Times as one of the most successful British actresses of recent decades, Olivier Award-winning  CELIA IMRIE is probably best known as one of the naked Calendar Girls - she needed bigger buns.  She has appeared in many films from Hilary & Jackie, Nanny McPhee, and Brigit Jones Diary to Highlander and Star Wars – The Phantom Menace. On TV she has featured in cult series from Absolutely Fabulous and Stephen Fry’s Kingdom to Return to Cranford. On stage Celia had a huge off-Broadway hit a few years back with her one–woman show Unsuspecting Susan.  Celia also gave a searing performance as Vera in the TV production of Ruth Rendell’s A Dark Adapted Eye (still available on DVD).   Now Celia is involved in the TV production of Fidelis Morgan’s Countess Ashby dela Zouche historical mystery novels.

Together they promise to deliver a dynamite evening quite unlike any usual author appearance. You will have readings from 17th century plays, extracts from the Countess novels, a Restoration acting lesson, some seventeenth century recipes, and they will end with a little sing-song, a Q&A and signing of whatever you care to buy or bring along...

Last Words of the Executed

Publishers Weekly

From colonial era public hangings to the last moments before a lethal injection, Northwestern journalism teacher Elder revisits the final words of the condemned, both famous and forgotten. They expressed contrition or angry denial, often accompanied by an argument against capital punishment. Elder calls his book “an oral history of the overlooked, the infamous and the forgotten,” who “speak to a common humanity with their last act on earth.” Some considered their words carefully: William Robinson, a Quaker executed in 1659 for protesting Massachusetts's banishment of his co-religionists, said, “I suffer not as an evil doer.... I suffer for Christ, in whom I live and in whom I die.” Others offer bizarre non sequiturs: in 2002, serial killer Aileen Wuornos proclaimed, “I'm sailing with the Rock and I'll be back like 'Independence Day'... big mother ship and all.” Elder culled his material from newspaper accounts, prison archives, and religious counselors who transcribed for posterity the final utterances of the roughly 16,000 men and women who've been executed in the United States. The late Studs Terkel contributed an eloquent foreword.
