Author Discussion & Signing with D.M. Pirrone for her No Less in Blood (A Modern Mysterywith links to Chicago of 1893 and Minnesota).

Publishers Weekly

An 1893 missing-person case has unexpected repercussions more than a century later in Pirrone's intriguing debut. In Birch Falls, Minn., 12-year-old Linnet Chapman is waiting for her mother, Grace Chapman, to join her and her grandfather, Jackson Schlegel, who looks after but doesn't own the Schlegel manse. Sadly, Linnet's abusive father, Luke Chapman, has already murdered Grace in Chicago. The 1904 will of mining magnate Andrew Jackson Schlegel, who died in 1907, contains a surprising bequest that could make Linnet very rich, ditto any others who can prove they're blood kin. Enter writer Rachel Connolly, an adoptee in search of her roots, who discovers that her late birth mother was related to the Schlegels. Rachel goes to Birch Falls and meets Linnet, who's found the diary of her great-grandmother, Mary Anne Schlegel, the key to understanding how Mary's disappearance during the Columbian World's Exposition in 1893 connects to Rachel and Linnett. Readers will hope to see more historical crime fiction from Pirrone, the nom de plume of Diane Piron-Gelman. (Feb.)

Synopsis

The movie that inspired filmmakers to direct is like the atomic bomb that went off before their eyes. The Film That Changed My Life captures that epiphany. It explores 30 directors’ love of a film they saw at a particularly formative moment, how it influenced their own works, and how it made them think differently.

Rebel Without a Cause inspired John Woo to comb his hair and talk like James Dean. For Richard Linklater, “something was simmering in me, but Raging Bull brought it to a boil.” Apocalypse Now inspired Danny Boyle to make larger-than-life films. A single line from The Wizard of Oz--“Who could ever have thought a good little girl like you could destroy all my beautiful wickedness?”--had a direct impact on John Waters. “That line inspired my life,” Waters says. “I sometimes say it to myself before I go to sleep, like a prayer.”

In this volume, directors as diverse as John Woo, Peter Bogdanovich, Michel Gondry, and Kevin Smith examine classic movies that inspired them to tell stories. Here are 30 inspired and inspiring discussions of classic films that shaped the careers of today’s directors and, in turn, cinema history.

Author Discussion & Signing: Gaham Moore

Author signing and discussion with Graham Moore for his book Sherlockian. It is a great mystery and well written. It is not a pastiche! It is the telling of two concurrent stories. One set in the late 19th & early 20th century, deals with A.C. Doyle deciding how and when to kill off Sherlock and consequences he suffers for that decision. There is Brahm Stoker in it helping Doyle solve a chain murders of East End prostitutes. (Haven't got to that part yet.) The second part is set in the 21st century with 22 year old newly installed BSI solving the murder of an older BSI who had found the missing diaries of A.C. Doyle during the time he made the fatal decision to kill Holmes.

It promises to be an enjoyable evening talking about a book that "name drops" in the past & the present.
