Mystery Writers of America (Midwest Region) Meeting

Guest Speaker: Dana Kaye

Title & Topic: Your Book, Your Brand: The Step-By-Step Guide to Launching Your Book and Boosting Your Sales

Description

You've finished your book. That's step one. Book publicist Dana Kaye now takes you through step two: getting your book into the hands of legions of readers. How we read books is changing rapidly, and so is where we buy them. From the rise of eBooks to the impact of online retail sales through companies like Amazon to the wide acceptance of self-publishing as a natural path countless authors are writing books and then wondering what to do with them. If they decide to bring their book to market themselves, how do they ensure they will reach audiences without a marketing or publicity department and without the budgets and outreach that publishers have? If a house has acquired the rights and promises to publish, how does that writer supplement the work of those publicity managers and develop a direct relationship with everyone from the media to potential fans?
Throughout her career, Dana Kaye has helped authors raise their profiles. As the head of her own independent PR firm, Kaye Publicity, Dana Kaye has succeeded in getting her client's books into the hands of as many readers as possible. She has been a driving force behind numerous bestselling authors across all genres, from thriller authors like Gregg Hurwitz and Jamie Freveletti to children's authors like Liz Climo and Claudia Gray, and now she brings her insights to you. Kaye walks writers through all of their options, taking the anxiety out of the pitching process and teaching them how to be their own best promoters. Sharp, intuitive, and user-friendly, Dana Kaye's guide is a must-have for all authors with bestselling aspirations.
"When it comes to professionalism, hard work and dedication, Danais the best there is She has been invaluable in helping me build mybrand, and has come up with really inventive ways to promote mybooks(like fun contests, which help me not only promote mybooksbut also connect with my fans )" Liz Climo, Author and Illustrator of"Lobster is the Best Medicine.

Title: Sorrow Road

Auhtor: Julia Keller

Description

In 1944, three young men from a small town in West Virginia are among the American forces participating in D-Day, changing the fortunes of the war with one bold stroke. How is that moment aboard a Navy ship as it barrels toward the Normandy shore related to the death of an old man in an Appalachian nursing home seventy-two years later?

In "Sorrow Road," the latest mystery from Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Julia Keller, two stories one set in the turbulent era of World War II and one in the present day are woven together to create a piercingly poignant tale of memory and family, of love and murder.

Bell Elkins, prosecuting attorney in Acker's Gap, West Virginia, is asked by an old acquaintance to look into the death of her beloved father in an Alzheimer's care facility. Did he die of natural causes or was something more sinister to blame? And that's not the only issue with which Bell is grappling: Her daughter Carla has moved back home. But something's not right. Carla is desperately hiding a secret.

Once again, past and present, good and evil, and revenge and forgiveness clash in a riveting story set in the shattered landscape of Acker's Gap, where the skies can seem dark even at high noon, and the mountains lean close to hear the whispered lament of the people trapped in their shadow.

Mystery Writers of America (Midwest Region) Meeting

Sunday, Sept. 25, NOON to one p.m., Centuries and Sleuths Bookstore, Forest Park, IL. Our first meeting of the fall will feature MWA Midwest member, author, and attorney Laura Caldwell from the Life After Innocence Project AND Jovan Mosley, an exoneree and attorney. We expect this to be a pretty powerful conversation and hope you can make it. Note the start time: NOON.

LAURA CALDWELL is a professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a published author of 15 books, including the Izzy McNeil novels and her nonfiction Long Way Home. She is the founder of Life After Innocence, which helps innocent people begin their lives again after being wrongfully imprisoned. She also is a co-editor of a new anthology, Anatomy of Innocence: Testimonies of the Wrongly Convicted. It will be released in February 2017.

JOVAN MOSLEY was 19 years old when Chicago police coerced him into confessing to a 1999 murder that he did not commit. He spent nearly six years in a holding cell in Cook County jail before he was granted a trial to prove his innocence. Freed in 2005 with the help of Laura Caldwell and Catharine O’Daniel, he has since earned his Juris Doctor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
