Author Discussion & Signing with Robert Olen Butler

Title: Hot Country

Author: Robert Olen Butler

This is the author's first visit, but he comes quite the reputation as a fine writter. We will list some of his other books besides Hot Country .

Christopher Marlowe Cobb (“Kit”), the swashbuckling early 20th-century
American newspaper war correspondent, travels to Mexico in April and May
of 1914
, during that country’s civil war and the American invasion of
Vera Cruz.

But covering the war in enemy
territory and in sweltering heat isn’t enough of a challenge for Cobb.
Soon, he’s falling in love with a young Mexican laundress, Luisa, who
may not be as innocent as she seems, and he’s witnessing the
inexplicable attempted sniper assassination of a priest (miraculously,
the bullet rebounds off the cross around his neck, leaving him
unharmed). Now Cobb is also trying to track down a sniper—and figure out
why important German officials are coming into the city in the middle
of the night from ammunition ships docked in the port.

An exciting tale of intrigue and espionage, Butler’s powerful crime-fiction debut is a thriller not to be missed.

One of the finest crime writers we have, Val McDermid’s more than two dozen heart-stopping thrillers have won her international renown and a devoted following of readers across the globe. In The Vanishing Point, she kicks off a terrifying thriller with a nightmare scenario.

A young child is brazenly snatched from the security checkpoint at a busy airport while his guardian watches from the glass inspection box, helpless to prevent the abduction. But this is no ordinary kidnapping, as this is no ordinary child—Jimmy’s mother was Scarlett, a reality TV star who died tragically young from cancer. Reluctant to leave the care of her child to her troubled and unreliable family, before her death Scarlett entrusted the boy to the person she believed best able to give him a happy, stable life: her ghost writer, Stephanie Harker.

As Stephanie assists the FBI in their attempt to recover the missing boy, she reveals her history with Scarlett and Jimmy, reaching into the past to uncover the motive for the abduction. Has he been taken by his own relatives? Has he been kidnapped by Stephanie’s obsessive ex-lover to teach her a lesson? Has one of Scarlett’s stalkers come back to haunt them all? Or is it simply a kidnap for ransom? The final resolution confronts Stephanie with a shocking story of murder and conspiracy, and forces her to make the most difficult choice of her life, a choice that will have long-term repercussions for everyone touched by this crime.

A powerful, grippingly plotted thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the last page, The Vanishing Point showcases McDermid at the height of her talent.

Published: Grove Press - September 1st, 2012

Val McDermid is a world-class crime writer whose books have sold millions of copies worldwide, making her a household name. Now joining the Atlantic Monthly Press list for the first time, she arrives with a chilling, high-velocity thriller featuring her immensely popular characters, Dr. Tony Hill and Carol Jordan.

Clinical psychologist Tony Hill has had a good run. He and police detective Carol Jordan have put away scores of dangerous criminals and have a clearance rate that colleagues envy or resent. But there is one serial killer who has shaped and defined their careers, a person whose evil surpasses all others: Jacko Vance, an ex-celebrity and sociopath whose brilliance and utter lack of remorse have never left Tony’s mind in the ten years Vance has been locked up. Now Jacko has broken out of prison and, with a mind even more twisted and cunning than before, he is focused on wreaking revenge on Tony and Carol for the years he has spent in prison. They don’t know when Jacko will strike, or where. All they know is that he will cause them to feel fear like they’ve never known.

A chilling, utterly gripping tour de force, The Retribution is the ideal introduction or reintroduction to the world of Tony Hill and Carol Jordan. It is an unforgettable read.
